COVID19 Vaccine Young Child
RDV Sportsplex Pediatrics is happy to announce that we have received doses of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine for children aged at least 6 months and under 6 years old.
We continue to support vaccination as the most effective means of disease prevention. The CDC and FDA have approved both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for this age group. We have chosen to provide the Moderna vaccine because of its faster completion time for the series for most patients (as little as 4 weeks versus 11 weeks with the Pfizer vaccine). We will be scheduling vaccine appointments on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with 10 appointment slots per day. Please see below for some frequently asked questions: Who should receive a COVID-19 vaccine?Everyone 6 months of age or older is approved for and recommended to receive a COVID-19 vaccine by the CDC.
Are the COVID-19 vaccines safe? All of the vaccines given emergency approval by the FDA and recommended by the CDC (Moderna, Pfizer, and Janssen) have undergone clinical trials to both prove their safety and efficacy. The FDA and CDC continue to monitor each vaccine for reports of significant side effects and adverse reactions.
What can I do to help my child with side effects after the vaccine?Fever and pain after vaccination can be managed with Tylenol or Motrin as needed. We are happy to provide updated weight-based dosing recommendations at the time of your child’s vaccine appointment. We do not recommend pre-medicating prior to a vaccine. A cool compress can also be used to help alleviate swelling or pain at the injection site. Extra snuggles are always recommended after vaccines as well.
What side effects can I expect after my child receives their vaccine?Side effects of the vaccine are similar to those of other routine childhood vaccines. See the table below for specific side effects observed during the clinical trials.
